Why your LinkedIn Profile Matters
Over recent years, LinkedIn has massively expanded its reach and influence. Irrespective of whether you are looking for a new job, your LinkedIn profile is your global business card. Most business professionals automatically go to LinkedIn, before or shortly after they have first spoken to or met you, this is to get a sense of your background and connections.
Recruiters and hiring managers spend hours on LinkedIn researching candidates and it is increasingly becoming the only candidate resource for a lot of headhunters. Here are ten ways to improve your profile:
- Use a professional head-shot as your profile picture.
- Spend time crafting your executive summary and your title; describe what you do in under 120 characters. Optimize your profile’s search visibility; LinkedIn has an algorithm so its important to include relevant industry keywords which will make you easier to find when people are searching for professionals in your field.
- List your skills in the summary at the top. Add all relevant skills, certification and qualifications you have and ask your friends and colleagues for endorsements.
- Regularly review and revise your summary. It needs to be up to date and relevant. In addition to outlining what you have done in the past you can also talk about what you want to do next professionally, and what your goals and aspirations are.
- You can now add images, videos, documents and links, so upload relevant pieces that show off your finest work. If you have had an article published or a great photo of you speaking at a conference, post these too.
- There is no need to list every single job you have ever had…..keep it tight and relevant to what you are doing now or want to do next. Focus on the companies and the roles you have had which best highlight your skills and experience. Detail achievements and responsibilities as well.
- Edit your URL. In the upper-right corner of your profile, you’ll see “Edit public profile and URL.” Click it. Tighten it to be as personalized as possible so you are you easier to find through search engines.
- Make sure your contact details are up to date…
- Build up your network of contacts with relevant professional people, join relevant groups for the industry that you are in or want to be in. Be selective about who you accept invitations to connect from and remember you can disconnect if you change your mind later.
- Try to write original content and post articles every few months, covering topics that are relevant to your industry. Remember, this is not the platform for extreme political views or explicit photos!!
